Key Registrations & Procedures
Tax Card (Skattekort)
Deadline: Must obtain before receiving first salary
Processing Time: Issued electronically once you have a D-number or fødselsnummer. Available on skatteetaten.no.
Fees: Free
Appointment: No separate appointment — apply online once you have your ID number.
Required Documents:
- D-number or fødselsnummer
- Employment contract
- Bank account details
- Expected annual income estimate
Where to Do It:
Online at skatteetaten.no (recommended). Also at Skatteetaten offices. Your employer retrieves your tax card electronically via the Altinn portal.
If You Don't Do It:
Without a tax card, employer deducts 50% tax from your salary. Can be reclaimed in annual return but creates cash flow problems.
Regional Variations: Same system nationwide. Online portal accessible everywhere.
