Key Registrations & Procedures
PPS Number (Personal Public Service Number)
- Valid passport or EU national ID card
- Proof of Irish address — utility bill, bank statement, or official letter in your name at your Irish address. A lease/rental agreement alone may not be accepted.
- Proof of reason for requiring a PPS number — employment contract (letter from employer with start date), offer letter, or letter from Revenue
- Completed PPS application form (REG1 — available online at gov.ie or at the Intreo Centre)
Your local Intreo Centre (Social Welfare office). Dublin: several locations including Parnell Square, Bishop Square, and others. Find yours at gov.ie > Intreo Centres. Appointment only.
No fine for not having one, but without a PPS number you may not be able to be paid, pay taxes, access social welfare, healthcare (medical card), or public services. Employers may not be able to legally pay you without one.
Tax Registration (Revenue)
- PPS number (mandatory)
- Employment details (employer name, start date)
- Irish bank account details
- Previous P45/P60 (if transferring from another Irish employer)
- myAccount login credentials (register at revenue.ie)
Online at revenue.ie > myAccount. First-time users: register for myAccount using your PPS number and a verified Irish address. Your employer registers you via ROS (Revenue Online Service).
Without Revenue registration, emergency tax is applied (40% rate + USC from day 1). This can be reclaimed but causes significant cash flow issues. Self-employed must register for income tax and VAT where applicable.
IRP Registration (Non-EU only)
- EU/EEA citizens have automatic right to reside in Ireland
- No registration with immigration is required for EU/EEA nationals
- You only need a PPS number and Revenue registration
Not applicable for EU/EEA citizens. Ireland does not require EU citizens to formally register their residence — one of the few EU countries with this policy.
No penalty — EU citizens have full freedom of movement in Ireland. Just ensure you get a PPS number for employment and public services.
