Key Registrations & Procedures

Registration Certificate (Regisztrációs igazolás)

Regional Directorate of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF)

Deadline: Apply within 93 days of arrival
Processing Time: 21 days processing. Receipt given on application day.
💰Fees: HUF 1,000 (~€3)
📅Appointment: Appointment required — book online at oif.gov.hu.
Required Documents:
  • Valid passport or EU/EEA national ID card
  • Proof of address — rental contract or accommodation certificate (lakcímkártya application)
  • Proof of employment (work contract) OR proof of self-employment (egyéni vállalkozó registration) OR proof of sufficient funds (HUF 250,000/month) and health insurance
  • Completed application form (available at OIF office or online)
  • Passport-sized photo
Where to Do It:

OIF (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság) regional directorates. In Budapest: OIF, Budafoki út 60, 1117 Budapest. Offices in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Győr, and other cities.

If You Don't Do It:

Fines of up to approximately HUF 200,000 (~€500) for late registration. May face an order to leave Hungary. May not be able to access Hungarian healthcare (TAJ) or tax system without it.

Regional Variations: Budapest has the main office and longest queues. Regional offices generally faster.

Address Card (Lakcímkártya)

Document Office (Okmányiroda)

Deadline: Within 3 days of establishing an address in Hungary
Processing Time: 8 working days for the card. Temporary certificate issued immediately.
💰Fees: Free for first issuance
📅Appointment: Appointment required — book online at okmanyiroda.gov.hu.
Required Documents:
  • Valid passport or EU/EEA national ID card
  • Registration certificate from OIF
  • Proof of address — rental contract with landlord's signed declaration (tulajdonosi hozzájárulás)
  • Completed address registration form
Where to Do It:

Any Okmányiroda (Document Office) in your district. Budapest has offices in each kerület (district). Also available at Kormányablak (Government Window) offices.

If You Don't Do It:

Fines may apply for late registration. The lakcímkártya is your primary proof of address in Hungary — needed for employment, banking, healthcare, and education enrollment.

Regional Variations: Same process nationwide. Budapest has multiple offices per district.

Tax Number (Adószám / Adóazonosító jel)

National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV)

Deadline: Must obtain before starting employment
Processing Time: 8–15 working days. Employer often applies on your behalf.
💰Fees: Free
📅Appointment: No appointment needed. Walk-in at NAV customer service offices.
Required Documents:
  • Valid passport or EU ID card
  • Address card (lakcímkártya) or temporary address certificate
  • Registration certificate from OIF
  • Completed tax registration form (available at NAV office or online)
Where to Do It:

NAV customer service offices. Budapest: NAV Központi Ügyfélszolgálat, Hajós u. 10–12. Also at Kormányablak (Government Window) offices nationwide. Online at nav.gov.hu with client gate (ügyfélkapu) access.

If You Don't Do It:

May not be able to be employed without a tax number. Employer faces penalties for paying workers without tax registration.
