Key Registrations & Procedures

Tax ID (Steuerliche Identifikationsnummer / IdNr)

Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt)

Deadline: Automatically issued after Anmeldung. No separate application needed.
Processing Time: 2–6 weeks by post to your registered address. Can take up to 3 months in busy periods.
💰Fees: Free
📅Appointment: No appointment needed — assigned automatically after Anmeldung.
Required Documents:
  • No additional documents — the Anmeldung triggers automatic issuance
  • If you need it urgently: contact BZSt or your local Finanzamt with your Meldebescheinigung and passport
Where to Do It:

Sent by post from the BZSt to your registered address. If you need it faster, visit your local Finanzamt (tax office) in person with your Meldebescheinigung — they can sometimes look it up or expedite.

If You Don't Do It:

No fine for not having one, but your employer will deduct the highest tax rate (Steuerklasse 6 = ~42%) until they have your IdNr. You can reclaim the overpayment in your annual tax return, but it can mean months of reduced take-home pay.

Regional Variations: Federal system — same process nationwide. The BZSt handles all issuances centrally.
