EU Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung (Freedom of Movement Certificate)
Deadline: No longer legally required since 2013, but some employers, banks, or landlords may request proof of EU residence right.
Processing Time: 2–4 weeks if requested
Fees: €10–€25 depending on municipality
Appointment: Required at Ausländerbehörde (book online).
Required Documents:
- Valid passport or EU national ID card
- Meldebescheinigung (Anmeldung confirmation)
- Proof of employment or self-employment or sufficient funds + health insurance
- Passport-sized biometric photo
Where to Do It:
Local Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners Authority). In Berlin: Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA), Friedrich-Krause-Ufer 24. In Munich: Ausländerbehörde, Ruppertstr. 19.
If You Don't Do It:
No penalty — this document is no longer required for EU citizens under German law. However, having it can simplify interactions with employers, banks, and housing agencies.
Regional Variations: Availability and processing vary by city. Some Ausländerbehörden no longer issue it at all since it became optional.
