Tax Card (Verokortti)
Deadline: Must obtain before receiving your first salary
Processing Time: Issued within 1–2 weeks. Available digitally on MyTax (OmaVero) portal.
Fees: Free
Appointment: No appointment needed for online applications.
Required Documents:
- Finnish personal identity code (henkilötunnus)
- Employment contract or estimate of annual income
- Completed tax card application (online at vero.fi/omavero)
- Bank account details (for potential refunds)
Where to Do It:
Online via OmaVero at vero.fi (requires Finnish online banking credentials or Suomi.fi authentication). In-person at Vero offices in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, and other cities.
If You Don't Do It:
Without a tax card, 60% emergency withholding tax is applied to your salary. Can be reclaimed in annual tax return but causes significant cash flow problems.
Regional Variations: Same tax system nationwide. Online system accessible from anywhere in Finland.
