Key Registrations & Procedures
CPR Number & Address Registration
- Valid passport or EU/EEA national ID card
- Proof of address — rental contract (lejekontrakt) or property deed
- Employment contract or letter from employer OR proof of enrollment at a Danish educational institution OR proof of self-employment OR proof of sufficient funds
- Marriage certificate (if registering a spouse)
- Completed registration form (available online or at the center)
Copenhagen: International House (Gyldenløvesgade 11). Other cities: local Borgerservice center at the municipality. The International House combines SIRI, Tax, and municipal services in one location.
Fines of approximately DKK 5,000 for late registration. Without a CPR number you may not be able to open a bank account, get a Danish phone number, access healthcare, or start employment.
Tax Card (Skattekort)
- CPR number (mandatory — must register first)
- Employment contract
- Bank account details (Danish NemKonto)
- Completed tax registration form (available on skat.dk)
Online via skat.dk/tastselv (most common method). In-person at SKAT offices or International House in Copenhagen.
Without a tax card your employer deducts 55% emergency tax (nødtræk) from your salary. This can be reclaimed when filing your annual return, but causes significant cash flow issues.
NemID/MitID (Digital Identity)
- Valid passport or national ID card
- CPR number
- Danish phone number (required for MitID app activation)
Start at borger.dk, then verify identity in person at a Borgerservice center. Activation code sent to your Danish address.
Not mandatory, but without MitID you may not be able to access online banking, tax portal (TastSelv), digital post (e-Boks), or any Danish government digital services.
